NEW DRIVER PROGRAM
Our Signature Course
Created for Yukoners of all ages who are new to driving or want to strengthen their skills behind the wheel, the New Driver Program prepares new drivers to become safe, responsible, and confident on the road.
The program includes 20 hours of classroom instruction and 10, 20, 30, or 50 hours of personalized, one-on-one in-car training, designed and delivered by experienced Yukon Driving Academy instructors.
In the classroom:
- Defensive driving techniques
- Vehicle inspection and tire maintenance
- Collision prevention
- Turning manoeuvres and backing procedures
- Understanding road markings
- Safe passing practices
- Driver awareness and impairment
In the car:
- Evaluation of current driving skills
- Parallel parking
- Roundabouts and intersections
- Anticipating and avoiding hazards
- Defensive driving techniques
Course benefits:
Students who complete both the classroom and in-car training receive a Certificate of Completion, which can be used for:
- Insurance discounts
- Two Grade 11 elective credits
Who can register:
- Minimum age: 15 years old (or 14 and turning 15 during the course)
- A learner’s permit is not required for the classroom portion, but it is required before in-car training begins.

PRIVATE VEHICLE INSTRUCTION
One-on-One Lessons Built Around You
Our one-on-one lessons are designed around what each learner needs, to prepare for the road test and to become a safe, confident driver.
All lessons are done in a Yukon Driving Academy training car equipped with a dual brake for added safety.

NEW TO YUKON (NTY)
Get to Know Yukon Roads
Designed for drivers with a valid driver’s licence from outside the Yukon,
whether you’ve moved here from another province or another country.
The program teaches Yukon driving regulations and safe driving practices for local roads and conditions.
Includes:
- 6 hours of classroom theory
- Five 1-hour in-car driving sessions
In the classroom:
- Yukon signage and road markings
- Yukon regulations
- Navigating Yukon roads
- Defensive driving techniques
- Collision prevention
In the car:
- Evaluation of your current driving skills

GEARING UP – MOTORCYCLE TRAINING COURSE
A Weekend Course for New Riders
Gearing Up is the Canada Safety Council’s national motorcycle rider training program, known for its excellent curriculum and delivery. Learn to ride safely and confidently over one weekend, taught by certified Yukon Driving Academy instructors.
Course schedule:
- Friday: classroom theory, 6:00 to 8:00 PM
- Saturday: 3 hours of closed-course skills training
- Sunday: 3 hours of closed-course skills training
- Plus: 2 hours of one-on-one on-road instruction, booked at a time that works for you and your instructor
In the classroom:
- Defensive riding strategies
- Risk awareness
- Riding gear regulations
On the closed course, we start with the fundamentals:
- Starting the motorcycle properly
- Balancing the motorcycle with effective use of the brakes
- Clutch control at low speeds
As your confidence grows, we move on to:
- Collision avoidance
- Emergency braking
- Counter-steering
Training bikes are provided, and class sizes are small to ensure personalized instruction. Students must provide their own riding gear (see Motorcycle Gear Requirements).
Graduates receive a Canada Safety Council certificate, which may help newly licensed riders obtain motorcycle insurance.

MOTORCYCLE GEAR REQUIREMENTS
All motorcycle lessons, courses, and road test rentals use YDA motorcycles.
Students must provide their own riding gear and wear it every time they ride.
Minimum gear required:
- DOT-approved helmet (a full-face helmet is strongly recommended)
- Goggles or glasses if your helmet has no face shield
- Gloves
- Jeans or heavier pants
- Jean jacket or heavy leather jacket
- Hiking boots or sturdier footwear that covers the ankle
Not permitted:
- Leggings or thin, easily torn clothing
- Sneakers
- Steel-toe boots

DEFENSIVE DRIVING COURSE (DDC)
Safer Drivers, Fewer Collisions
The Defensive Driving Course is designed to strengthen drivers’ defensive driving skills. This 6 to 8 hour course uses visual aids and is taught by qualified instructors, who show participants how to recognize and avoid hazardous situations on the road.

- Understanding road markings
- Safe passing procedures
- Driver awareness and impairment
- Backing manoeuvres
- Tire maintenance and safety
For individuals: completing the course can remove up to 3 demerit points from your driving record.

REMEDIAL PROGRAM
Get Your Licence Back
The Remedial Program is required by the Yukon Driver Control Board (DCB) before a licence can be reinstated following a Driving Under the Influence (DUI) conviction and suspension. It is equivalent to our Defensive Driving Course.

CLASS 4 PREPARATION
Upgrade to a Commercial Licence
Designed for drivers with a valid Class 5 licence who want to upgrade to a Class 4 commercial licence. A Class 4 licence is needed to drive vehicles such as taxis, limousines, ambulances, and buses carrying up to 24 passengers.
This program teaches the regulations commercial drivers need to know while building safe driving practices, through 4 hours of classroom theory and 2 hours of in-car instruction.
In the classroom:
- The Yukon licensing system
- Heavy vehicle braking
- Basic driving skills and defensive driving
- Fuel-efficient driving
- Hours of service
- Pre-trip inspection

In the car:

HEAVY TRAILER ENDORSEMENT (HTE)
Tow Heavy Trailers Safely and Confidently
The Heavy Trailer Endorsement program teaches drivers the fundamentals of safely loading and operating trailers over 4,550 kg, such as large RVs, horse trailers, and equipment trailers.
With a strong focus on safety, the program covers thorough safety checks and trailer inspections, so participants are well prepared for the responsibilities of operating heavy trailers.
Includes:
- 3 hours of classroom instruction
- 2 hours of hands-on practical training and evaluation
Course highlights:
- Types of trailers
- Using different couplers
- Brake adjustment and inspection
- Load securement
- Pre-trip safety inspections
- Reversing and placing a trailer

LIGHT TRAILER PROGRAM (LTP)
Learn to Tow with Confidence
The Light Trailer Program is a hands-on course that teaches drivers the fundamentals of safely loading and operating personal trailers under 4,550 kg, such as utility trailers, boat trailers, and smaller campers. Training covers hazard awareness, hookup procedures, and techniques for reversing a trailer, followed by an evaluation.
Course length: about 2 hours for one person. Group sessions take longer, so everyone gets time behind the wheel.
With a strong focus on safety, the program includes thorough safety checks and trailer inspections, so participants are well prepared for the responsibilities of towing.

This course will help you:

ROAD TEST VEHICLE RENTAL
A Reliable Vehicle for Test Day
Our training vehicles are available to rent for both car and motorcycle road tests.
A one-hour driving assessment or lesson is required with every rental. It gives you time to get comfortable with the vehicle and makes sure you’re confident and ready for your test. We can also add an extra lesson beforehand to help you feel fully prepared on test day.
Price: $168.00, GST included, for the one-hour lesson or assessment plus the road test rental (car or motorcycle).
Motorcycle rentals follow the same gear rules as our lessons (see Motorcycle Gear Requirements).
Please note: rentals are subject to availability and may not be offered if our vehicles are already booked for training or testing. Book early to reserve your spot.
